Borussia Dortmund secured a morale boosting 2-0 win over Arsenal at the Signal Iduna Park to establish themselves as the firm favourites in the Champions League group D. The competition in the group D was primarily between Arsenal and Dortmund, as many do not expect Galatasaray and Anderlecht to post much of a challenge. Arsenal came into the encounter after having won 1-0 in the same stage last season. However, they appeared no match for the Germans who could have scored much more with some clinical finishing.

Arsenal only had a glimmer of opportunities throughout the 90 minutes, but they were unable to take any of them with Danny Welbeck guilty of not finishing some good opportunities. The former Manchester United striker was playing up front in place of the injured Olivier Giroud just a few days after completing his £ 16 million transfer from Old Trafford. Welbeck’s finishing qualities has been criticised by many pundits in recent years, and it came to the fore against Dortmund. Opposition manager Jurgen Klopp said that the day could not have gone much better for the German club.

Dortmund have been imperious in the last few league matches. Apart from the opening day defeat against Leverkusen, they have managed to reach the heights they hit when they won the league a few years ago. “I’m very pleased. Three players went out of the team because of muscle problems [last night]. In the morning we made some decisions and I have to say it was a really great performance from my team. It was pressing and counter-pressing to perfection. We were brave, we were fast. We had everything we needed for this game because if you let them have one metre of space they are so strong,” said Klopp, whose team face Mainz in the league during the weekend.
